Choosing the right modern wall paintings for living room walls in an Indian home comes down to one decision before colour or price: do you want the painting to anchor the room, or to quietly complete it? Our top pick for most homes is the 999STORE Unframed Printed Abstract Art Canvas Painting, 150 x 91 cm. Seen at around ₹2,477 at research time, it is large enough to fill the wall above a three-seater sofa on its own, with a bold abstract design that suits contemporary living rooms without demanding a matching set of furniture.
A modern wall painting does more than fill an empty wall. It sets the mood of the room, gives the sofa wall a focal point, and — in Indian homes — often carries a meaning as well: seven running horses for energy and success, a calm abstract for a reading corner, a floral canvas to soften a stark white wall. This guide compares six genuinely different options — a large abstract, a budget Vastu horses painting, a premium statement canvas, a stretched seven-horses canvas, a floral print and a round golden-framed abstract — so you can match size, style and meaning to your wall before you buy. Prices below are as found during research; please check the live listing before ordering, as prices and stock can change, especially during a sale.

Key Takeaways
- Measure the wall first: a painting should cover roughly two-thirds of the sofa width — a small frame lost in the middle of a large wall is the most common buying mistake.
- Abstract canvases are the safest modern choice; seven-horses paintings add a Vastu meaning that many Indian buyers specifically want for the living room.
- Framed, stretched and unframed are different products: an unframed canvas needs a frame or a stretcher before it can hang, so check the format before ordering.
- UV-textured and laminated finishes resist fading under tube lights and sunlight far better than plain matte prints.
- Hang the centre of the painting at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor, and leave equal breathing space on both sides.

How We Choose
We shortlisted modern wall paintings that work in real Indian living rooms, for real walls and real budgets. Our criteria were:
- Real listings, real prices: Every ranked pick below comes from a real Amazon.in listing with a verifiable ASIN, and every price and M.R.P. was read from a price-tracking record for that listing in late October and early November. No invented products, no invented discounts.
- Size stated honestly: A wall painting lives or dies by its size on the wall, so we give the listed size for every pick and flag where a set's overall size differs from its individual panels.
- Format honesty: Listings blur "canvas painting", "framed print" and "self-adhesive art" together. We label each pick's true format — unframed canvas, stretched canvas, framed print or MDF panel — so nobody buys a poster expecting a stretched canvas.
- Style range: The six picks cover abstract, floral, Vastu horses and statement art, so the guide works whether your living room is minimalist, traditional or somewhere in between.
- Value at the listed price: What you actually get for the money — a single large canvas, a framed set or a small Vastu piece — compared fairly across the list, using the price-tracking record rather than the struck-through M.R.P. alone.
- Ready to hang: We favour pieces that arrive ready to hang, and we say plainly where an unframed canvas still needs framing.

Best Overall
1. 999STORE Unframed Printed Abstract Art Canvas Painting for Living Room, 150 x 91 cm
- Price: around ₹2,477 at research time (M.R.P. ₹3,999)
- Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count
- Material: printed canvas, unframed
- Size: 150 x 91 cm, single panel
- Best for: the main sofa wall in a contemporary living room
- Care: keep out of direct sunlight and damp; dust with a soft dry cloth
Best Overall: this is the painting we would buy first because it solves the most common living-room problem in one purchase: a bare wall above the sofa. At 150 x 91 cm it is genuinely large — wide enough to anchor a three-seater without a gallery of small frames around it — and the abstract design is bold without being tied to one colour scheme, so it survives a change of cushions or curtains. The honest caveats: it is unframed, so budget for framing or stretching before it can hang, and the exact colours can vary slightly from the listing photos, as with most printed canvas. For a first modern wall painting, or a housewarming gift where you do not know the recipient's taste in detail, this is the safest large-scale choice in the guide.
How to use it: hang it centred above the sofa with its centre at eye level, leaving roughly a hand's width of wall showing on each side of the sofa. It pairs naturally with plain cushions and a wooden console below; read our full guide to the best wall hangings for living room for pieces that sit well beside a large canvas.
Best Budget
2. SAF Paintings 7 Running Horses Vastu UV Textured Wall Painting, 12 x 18 Inch
- Price: around ₹263 at research time (M.R.P. ₹999)
- Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count
- Material: UV-textured print on MDF
- Size: 12 x 18 inches, single panel
- Best for: entrances, pooja-adjacent walls, small living rooms and gifting
- Care: keep out of direct sunlight and moisture; dust with a soft dry cloth
Best Budget: seven running horses for around ₹263 is the lowest-risk way to try Vastu wall art, and the UV-textured finish gives the surface a slight relief that reads richer than a flat print. The size is honest — this is a small piece, not a statement canvas — so buy it for a narrow wall, an entrance, a study or a gift, not for the main sofa wall. The honest caveat: at this size and price it is a decorative accent, and the MDF base is lighter and less substantial than a stretched canvas, so do not judge it against framed canvas pieces costing five times more.
How to use it: hang it on the wall you face when entering the home, at eye level, where the horses appear to run inward. It sits well beside a wooden mandir or a console with a diya; read our full guide to the best Ganesha canvas wall paintings for devotional art that pairs with it.
Best Premium
3. 999STORE Unframed Printed Abstract Art Canvas Painting for Living Room, 60 x 90 Inches
- Price: around ₹5,962 at research time (M.R.P. ₹7,499)
- Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count
- Material: printed canvas, unframed
- Size: 60 x 90 inches, single panel
- Best for: large living rooms with a genuinely empty main wall
- Care: keep out of direct sunlight and damp; professional framing recommended
Best Premium: this is the statement pick, and its size is the whole argument. A 60 x 90 inch canvas turns a bare living-room wall into the room's centrepiece, and the abstract design is large-scale enough to read from across the room. The honest caveats are the most serious in this guide: it is unframed at this price, so professional framing or stretching adds real cost, and a canvas this large needs a solid wall and proper fixings — measure the wall twice, check the delivery and return terms on the live listing, and read every available buyer photo before spending this much. For a large home with a genuinely empty main wall, it is the right scale; for a flat or a first purchase, buy the top pick instead.
How to use it: hang it alone on the main wall with nothing competing beside it — no clock, no small frames — and let the furniture sit well below its lower edge. It pairs with a low console and a floor lamp; read our full guide to the best floor lamps for living room for lighting that flatters a large canvas.
Best for Vastu
4. 999STORE Wooden Stretched Framed Seven Horses Canvas Painting, 24 x 36 Inches
- Price: around ₹1,449 at research time (M.R.P. ₹4,999)
- Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count
- Material: high-definition printed canvas, stretched on a wooden frame
- Size: 24 x 36 inches, single panel
- Best for: the main living-room wall where a Vastu motif is wanted at a proper scale
- Care: keep out of direct sunlight and damp; dust with a soft brush or dry cloth
Best for Vastu: if you want seven horses and you want them to actually show, this is the pick. At 24 x 36 inches it is large enough to read as the room's main artwork rather than a small devotional accent, and the stretched-canvas format with a wooden frame means it arrives ready to hang — no framing errand, no poster curl. The honest caveat: the horses motif is traditional and brown-toned, so it suits warm, wood-heavy living rooms better than stark minimalist ones; check the buyer photos on the live listing for the exact colour before ordering.
How to use it: hang it on the main wall facing the entrance, centred above the sofa, with its centre at eye level. It pairs with warm wood furniture and brass accents; read our full guide to the best wall clocks for living room for a second wall piece that will not compete with it.
Best Floral
5. SAF Paintings Abstract Floral Canvas Wall Art Print, Unframed Rolled Art Print
- Price: around ₹487 at research time (M.R.P. ₹3,999)
Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count Material: rolled canvas print, unframed Size: check the size options on the live listing before ordering Best for: bedrooms, reading corners and living rooms that need softening Care: frame under glass or laminate to protect the print; keep out of damp
Best Floral: floral canvas art has had a proper revival — oversized blooms and soft abstract petals rather than the dainty wallpaper florals of the past — and this rolled print is the cheapest way into that look. The colours are light and airy, so it softens a stark white wall without making the room feel busy. The honest caveats: it arrives rolled and unframed, so it needs a frame before it can hang, and a rolled canvas can hold a curl at the edges until it is properly mounted. Buy it when you already have a framer in mind, not as a last-minute gift.
How to use it: frame it simply — a thin black or natural-wood frame lets the flowers do the talking — and hang it where daylight falls on it, such as a bedroom wall or a living-room corner near a window. It pairs with plain linen cushions; read our full guide to the best decorative wall mirrors for home for a reflective piece to hang opposite it.
Best Round Pick
6. SAF Large Round Abstract Art Wall Painting with Golden Frame, Vinyl Sparkle Laminated
- Price: around ₹1,016 at research time (M.R.P. ₹1,999)
- Rating: check the live listing for the current rating and review count
- Material: digitally printed canvas, golden frame, vinyl sparkle laminate
- Size: round format — check the diameter on the live listing before ordering
- Best for: narrow walls, corners, stair walls and dining areas
- Care: wipe the laminate with a soft dry cloth; keep out of damp
Best Round Pick: most wall art is rectangular, which is exactly why a round painting stands out — it breaks the grid of sofas, televisions and rectangular frames that fills most living rooms. The golden frame and sparkle laminate give it a finished, premium look at a mid-range price, and the round shape suits the awkward spots other paintings cannot: a narrow wall beside a door, a stair landing, a dining corner. The honest caveat: the laminate can catch glare under a direct tube light, so hang it where the light falls across it rather than straight onto it, and confirm the diameter on the live listing, since a round piece that is too small looks lost on a wide wall.
How to use it: hang it alone on a narrow wall or above a console, with its centre at eye level, and keep the wall around it clear so the shape reads. It pairs with a round mirror or a small plant below; read our full guide to the best photo frames for wall for rectangular frames that sit well beside a round centrepiece.
More picks we checked out
- SAF Paintings Set of 3 Wooden Framed Abstract Floral Canvas Painting (B0CH8T1TXN), around ₹1,371*: a framed trio for wide walls above a sofa — good value as a set, but the floral theme repeats pick 5, so it stays a reserve.
- 999STORE Red and Yellow Abstract Wall Painting, 35 x 22 Inches (B084C4MLM8), around ₹1,817*: a bold warm abstract in a fiber frame — strong colours, but the red-yellow palette suits fewer rooms than the top pick's neutral abstract.
- SAF Paintings Modern Art Canvas, Colour 31, 16 x 16 Inch (B0F6NG8FQZ), around ₹499*: a compact framed modern piece for small walls and desks — well priced, but too small to anchor a living-room wall.
How to Choose Modern Wall Paintings for Living Room
What size wall painting should I buy for my living room?
Measure the wall and the furniture below it first. A painting above a sofa should cover roughly two-thirds of the sofa's width — for a standard three-seater that usually means a canvas at least 120 cm wide, or a set of three smaller panels. A small frame in the middle of a large wall looks lost, while an oversized canvas that touches the ceiling crowds the room.
Are abstract paintings better than traditional motifs for a modern living room?
Abstract paintings are the safer modern choice because they do not tie the room to one theme or colour story, and they survive furniture changes. Traditional motifs — seven horses, Ganesha, Buddha, Radha Krishna — add meaning and suit Indian homes beautifully, but they should be chosen deliberately for the room's character rather than as a default.
What is the difference between framed, stretched and unframed canvas?
A framed canvas arrives in a frame and is ready to hang. A stretched canvas is wrapped around a wooden frame — also ready to hang, with a gallery look. An unframed canvas is a flat or rolled print that still needs framing or stretching, which adds cost and time. Always check the format on the live listing before ordering.
Where should I hang a modern wall painting in the living room?
Hang the centre of the painting at eye level, roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor, centred above the sofa or on the main feature wall. Leave breathing space on both sides, keep it out of direct sunlight to slow fading, and avoid hanging it where a tube light shines straight onto a laminated surface.
How do I care for a canvas wall painting in an Indian home?
Dust it regularly with a soft dry cloth or a soft brush, keep it away from damp walls and kitchen steam, and avoid harsh cleaners on the printed surface. UV-textured and laminated finishes resist fading better than plain matte prints, which matters in bright, sunlit rooms.
Can I mix a modern abstract with traditional art in one living room?
Yes, if one piece leads and the other supports it. Keep the large modern abstract on the main wall and put the smaller traditional piece — a Ganesha or Buddha canvas — on a secondary wall or in the pooja corner, in a similar frame colour so the room still feels coherent.
Vertu India's Verdict
Vertu India's top pick is the 999STORE Unframed Printed Abstract Art Canvas Painting, 150 x 91 cm — it is the one painting in this guide that fills a living-room wall properly on its own, at a price that leaves room in the budget for framing. If your budget is tight or you want a Vastu piece, the SAF 7 Running Horses painting at around ₹263 is the smartest small buy. And if your living room has a genuinely large empty wall, the 60 x 90 inch 999STORE statement canvas is the only pick here built for that scale — measure twice, frame it properly, and it will carry the room. As our editors found across all six picks, the painting that fits your wall always beats the painting that merely fits your budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best size for a modern wall painting in a living room?
Cover roughly two-thirds of the sofa width. For a three-seater sofa that usually means a canvas at least 120 cm wide, or a set of three panels. Measure the wall before ordering, and hang the centre at eye level.
Are seven-horses paintings good for the living room?
Yes — seven running horses are a classic Vastu motif associated with energy, success and forward movement, and they are one of the most popular living-room choices in Indian homes. Hang the painting where the horses appear to run into the room, not out of it.
Should I buy a framed or unframed canvas painting?
Buy framed or stretched if you want it ready to hang. Unframed canvases are cheaper but need framing or stretching first, which adds cost and time. Check the format on the live listing — listings often blur the two together.
How do I stop a canvas painting from fading?
Keep it out of direct sunlight, avoid damp walls, and prefer UV-textured or laminated finishes, which resist fading under tube lights and daylight better than plain matte prints. Dust it with a soft dry cloth rather than cleaning it wet.
Can modern abstract paintings suit a traditional Indian living room?
Yes, if the colours pick up something already in the room — a cushion, a rug or the wood tone of the furniture. A neutral or warm-toned abstract bridges modern and traditional furniture far better than a stark black-and-white piece.
What should I check on the live listing before ordering a wall painting?
Confirm the exact size, the format (framed, stretched or unframed), the frame colour where variants exist, the live price and stock, and the delivery and return terms — especially for large canvases, which are awkward to return.
